QUEENSLAND v NEW SOUTH WALES-FARRELL TRANSPORT SOLO TEAM MATCH 3
BRANDON (AYR), NORTH QUEENSLAND - SATURDAY, MAY 29
Posted 3 June, 2010

NEW SOUTH WALES lost its first match in six years in North Queensland and the bananabenders went ballistic!

Speedway itself was the big winner after this fast, pulsating match that took the bumper-sized crowd’s breath away.

The Brandon faithful rejoiced as their team finally beat the all-conquering southerners.

And the difference for this match?

The presence in the home side of the man who constantly routed NSW at the Gold Coast, Brisbaner Scott Smith.

He blasted to an 18-point maximum – a performance that lifted the rest of his team to a new level.

Fellow heat leaders Damien Koppe and Ashley Cathcart also hit their straps and Queensland was in business.

At the same time NSW languished under a few lacklustre rides, despite the customary powerhouse performance from Michael Dyer (15 points). The only other visitor to hit double figures was 17-year-old Daniel Begley (11+1).

NSW second string Anthony Perks came down with a mystery virus in the week before the meeting, lost six kilograms in six days and was unable to ride. He was replaced by travelling reserve, 16-year-old Bryce Johnston of Tamworth, who did his team proud with a fighting 6+1 from the deep end.

Queensland raced to an early lead and although NSW drew level at one stage, the tourists were always fighting a rearguard action as Smith tore them apart.

Queensland had a slight home track advantage with local Ayr rider Clinton Dennis clicking on his own terrain with a 10+4 score that, in partnership with Smith, proved deadly.

Both teams produced some cracking speedway on the only track in the world that has a sugar cane field on one side, the main national around-Australia highway on another and a railway line carrying freight trains throughout the meeting on a third side!

At the end of the night, this victory was long overdue for Queensland – and how the parochial Ayr crowd lapped it up!

For the sport itself in the far north of Australia, the win was a vital tonic.

QUEENSLAND 58: Scott Smith 18, Damien Koppe 13, Clinton Dennis 10+4, Ashley Cathcart 10, Mitchell Weismantel 6+4, Kurt Palmer 1, Roy Stout (res, dnr).

NSW-FARRELL TRANSPORT 50: Michael Dyer 15, Daniel Begley 11+1, Daine Stevens 7, Tim Heffernan 6+2, Bryce Johnston 6+1, Michael Slade 5, Anthony Perks (res, dnr).
